THREE IN-GAME DILEMMAS

Open a route. Then protect it.

Access to your neighbour’s lands, travel costs, convoy safety: three decisions about the same trade route.

Every agreement, detour and troop you commit comes at a cost.

Diplomacy

Let a rival cross your lands?

Your neighbour offers to waive tolls for your convoys. In exchange, they want their army to cross your lands.

  • Grant passage

Your convoys pay less. Their army may cross.

  • Refuse and negotiate

You keep control of passage, but gain no exemption.

IN THE GAME

Negotiate each treaty clause.

At court, propose passage rights, a toll exemption or tribute. Set the duration and beneficiaries. The agreement requires the parties’ signatures.

Trade

Pay the toll or take a detour?

The short route crosses a domain that taxes your convoys. Another route avoids that toll, but delays the return of your cargo.

  • Take the short route

Save time and pay the domain’s ruler.

  • Go around the domain

Avoid that toll, at the cost of a longer journey.

Plot the route. Compare the costs.

Choose the cargo and the convoy’s stops. The planner shows the route and tolls. A closed border or interception can stop the journey.

Protecting the route

How will you protect the route?

You have chosen the route. But troops threaten your convoys. Negotiate with their house, or send your soldiers to clear the crossing?

  • Negotiate protection

That house lets your convoys through. Others remain a threat.

  • Clear the crossing by force

You commit troops and resources, and risk a battle.

03 / ROLE, STRATEGY, STORY

How does a game work?

01

Play your character.

Give your characters a voice, convictions and an ambition. Bring them to life in courts and conversations.

02

Plan your orders.

Read the map. Choose an action and commit your resources. Scheduled orders resolve when the turn advances.

03

Move to the next turn.

04 / FOR GAME MASTERS

Create your world. Turn it into a story to play.

A divided kingdom, a disputed succession, fragile alliances… Set the opening situation, then let your players surprise you.

A tower under construction, a compass and parchment plans, in linocut.
A CAMPAIGN IDEA

A kingdom without an heir. Three houses, one throne. Let your players choose a side.

  1. Shape the world.

Draw counties, rivers and seas. Define the borders, nations and beliefs of your setting.

  2. Give it characters.

Create houses and their characters, distribute their lands and resources, then assign roles to your players.

  3. Bring the story to life.

Write guided scenes, publish events in the chronicle and bring court conversations to life. Your players decide what happens next.

BEFORE THE FIRST CHAPTER

A few things to know.

What kind of game is Estoire?

Estoire is an online medieval roleplaying game combined with turn-based strategy. You play characters within a faction and take part in diplomacy, trade, development, intrigue and conflict.

Do I need roleplaying experience?

You can start with a guided solo adventure. It walks you through your first decisions and introduces actions gradually. You do not need to choose an archetype on this page.

Can I play in a browser, without downloading?

Yes. Estoire runs directly in your web browser. Create your account to access discovery adventures and your games.

Do I have to wage war?

War is one possibility in this world. You can also pursue diplomatic, commercial, cultural or political ambitions. Your options depend on your characters and the game’s settings.

How does turn-based play work?

A turn represents one month in the game world. You prepare orders, then discover their outcomes when the turn advances. Some court actions are immediate. The real-world pace depends on how your game is organised.

Can I play solo or with other players?

Discovery adventures let you learn solo without gathering a group. Multiplayer games give character conversations, diplomacy and shared storytelling with a game master room to flourish.

Can I create my own world and be the game master?

Yes. Create a blank game or start from a template. As its creator, you have tools to prepare the map, factions and characters. You can then write guided scenes, publish events and invite your players to bring the world to life.
